VIA| The nation is mourning the loss of a man who served this nation well for many years. Even those who didn’t agree with his perspective can’t help but acknowledge Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s greatness as a thinker and his contributions to our highest court.
His funeral has been scheduled for this Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a national Catholic pilgrimage site visited by Pope Francis last fall.
Naturally, the funeral of any Supreme Court justice is bound to attract many of Washington’s top officials. But there’s one who will notably NOT be attending. Yep, as unbelievably disgraceful as it is, you probably guessed it’s none other than President Barack Obama.
President Barack Obama will not attend Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s funeral on Saturday, the White House said Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will attend.
Obama and first lady Michelle Obama instead will go to the Supreme Court on Friday “to pay their respects to Justice Scalia” while the justice lies in repose in the Great Hall, press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Wednesday.
The most recent member of the Supreme Court to die was Chief Justice William Rehnquist in 2005. In that instance, President George W. Bush not only attended the funeral, he also eulogized Rehnquist.
The first question that comes to mind is, what could President Obama possibly have going on Saturday morning that takes priority over honoring this man? You might even expect that the president could have weighed in on the timing, to ensure he could be there.
Couldn’t move back the 18 holes he’d planned? Maybe he has tix to a Broadway show? Only time he could squeeze in a game of pick-up basketball? Or maybe the president’s afraid of getting Constitutional cooties by being in the same room for too long paying homage to this man who so respected our nation’s constitution.
Of course, we all remember how the Obama administration made a point of sending not just one but three representatives to the funeral of the thug who died while attempting to rob a convenience store, Michael Brown. Meanwhile, the funerals of police officers like Houston Deputy Darren Goforth have gone ignored; even after eight officers were killed in eight days recently, Obama has been silent.
And while you might have found a way to excuse the president from attending or sending reps to all the funerals of cops (being generous here), a sitting Supreme Court justice? No other way to read this than blatant and intentional disrespect from this president. Utter disgrace and childishness.
What is equally sickening is that President Obama’s disrespect of this great Supreme Court justice may only be beginning… Scalia once noted he hoped his successor would not undo all the work he’d done; and you can bet Obama’s wish is exactly the opposite.
Once again, President Obama’s actions make abundantly clear his priorities — and his agenda for this nation.
