VIA| A surprise is not inherently good or bad. It’s just something that we didn’t expect to happen. Good surprises include surprise parties, winning the lottery, or having a baby. Bad surprises include anunexpected health problem or getting laid off.
For one army veteran, he was in for a surprise that wasn’t bad – but perhaps what would soon become one of the best moments of his life.
For 13 years, Sergeant First Class Jerry Holcomb served America in the Army. While he fought bravely for our country, he earned two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars – he was a courageous and selfless soldier.
But after his time fighting for freedom, Jerry experienced difficulty adjusting back to normal life.
However, Jerry’s community refused to let him fall into a state of depression and become just another statistic about how veterans struggle to adjust after battle.
During a game near the Fourth of July, Jerry and his family are invited to the center of the football field where he receives a standing ovation.
But then the announcer does something that completely surprises this dedicated war hero.
At the 1-minute mark in the video, the announcer tells Jerry and his wife to look at the big screen. That’s when a message is shared that is about to change Jerry’s life forever.
