VIA| On Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Bindi Irwin and her partner Derek Hough incited a chain reaction of tears from both the judges and crowd, during part one of the DWTS finale.
The powerful dance was set to “Footprints in the Sand,” by pop singer Leona Lewis.
After doing a freestyle dance that stood out for its simplicity, Hough and Irwin walked off the dance floor, playing into the ‘footprints in the sand’ motif of the number.
While Derek and Bindi’s feet didn’t make any footprints, a digital path was made, showing footprints in the sand. The footprints were supposed to represent Bindi’s late father, Steve Irwin, and led to a photo of father and daughter.
“For me this whole experience has meant the world to my whole family,” Bindi said while struggling, and failing, to fight back tears.
After her dance, that eventually was awarded a perfect score, Bindi spoke about how her friendship with her partner Derek Hough had helped transform her time on the program, and her life.
“I never really talked about everything that I felt when dad passed away, and I never thought I’d revisit that,” Bindi said.
“But to have Derek there to say, ‘It’s OK, I’m there for you,’ was something that I was so grateful for.”
