ELDER PATRIOT – Well how about that? The day after the debt ceiling was tossed aside by the Republican-led Congress President Obama spent an additional $339 billion with no intention or means to pay for it. One day and, boom, our debt jumped by over 2%.
Once again Ted Cruz was right. Late last week Mr. Cruz took to the well of the Senate to castigate Republican leadership for presenting the president with a blank check for the remainder of his term. Senator Cruz warned that giving the most profligate president in history carte blanche with the federal treasury was an abrogation of his party’s responsibility to the American people to maintain fiscal sanity. Now, in one day the president has spent the equivalent of $1000 for every person living in America.
The worst part is that Republicans can no longer contest any spending increases due to their agreement with the president. This raises the question; if they were Democrats what more could they have done to help advance the president’s agenda?
This calls to mind Ronald Reagan who said: “Government is like a baby: an alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.”
The only problem is that this is no longer laughable. We are 30 years removed from that time when our national debt was under $2 trillion. It will soon be more than ten times that amount.
There is no way to sugarcoat what the Republicans did by suspending the debt limit. Their explanation that they were clearing the decks for Paul Ryan is one more big lie that they’ve laid on the American public. If Paul Ryan wasn’t up to the fight it was their sworn duty to find a leader who was.
This one is right up there with overriding of two centuries of bankruptcy law and selling us on companies being “too big to fail” and the need to bail them out with trillions of dollars of our money.
That was bilge and this is bilge.
George H.W. Bush once said, “If the American people ever find out what we have done, they would chase us down in the street and lynch us.” Frankly George, they deserve a lot worse.
