ROMNEY WORDSWORTH – Free Speech and freedom of expression.  It is an intellectual concept that was one of the greatest achievements of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment.  As such, it is a birthright of Western Civilization.  Great wars were fought in the 18th century to give birth to legally protected free speech in America.  Even greater wars were fought against Totalitarianism in the 20th century to protect intellectual freedom.

Today, at the dawn of the 21st century, one could be forgiven for having the impression that it was the Great Dictators of the 20th century, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and Mao, who won the great battles of human conflict, and not the forces of Liberty and Freedom.

In Denmark, a Danish man by the name of Flemming Nielsen was charged and convicted for “racist speech” offenses.  What was his crime?  He wrote on Facebook the following:

“The ideology of Islam is just as loathsome, disgusting, suppressive and dehumanizing as Nazism. The mass immigration we are now seeing is the most destructive (thing) that has happened for the Danish society in recent history.”

Considering the virulent anti-semitism of Islam, and the codified call for Jewish genocide in the Koran, one can easily say that the man’s statement is well supported, if not completely inarguable.  That’s not even adding that Hitler is widely admired by Muslims in the Middle East, Mein Kampf can be found in bookstores across the Muslim Middle East, and that the conviction is nonsensical, because Muslims are not a Race, so it is impossible for statements criticizing Islam to be “racist”.  I am further hard pressed to think of anything sweeping through Danish civil society that has been as destructive as the rape epidemic wrought by Muslim migrants, short of the Danish embrace of Socialism.

Not only is such mild, fact based criticism of Islam no longer allowed in Denmark,  Nielson’s fine of 1600 euros was deemed to be “unappealable” because the fine was less than 3000 euros.  It was another example of how Facebook (or as I prefer to call it, Faceboot, referring to Orwell’s definition of tyranny) has become just another system of surveillance for the State, patrolled and scanned constantly for “thought crimes”.  Why people continue to use Faceboot is beyond me.

In the Netherlands, a Dutch man, Mark Jongeneel, a small business owner in the Dutch city of Sliedrecht, tweeted: “The college of Sliedrecht has a proposal to receive 250 refugees in the coming 2 years. What a bad plan!  For this, he was visited by the police at his home and his workplace and warned:  “You tweet a lot…We have orders to ask you to watch your tone. Your tweets may seem seditious”.  Dutch police are threatening numerous users of social media who criticize the flooding of Europe with Muslim migrants with the amorphous charge of “sedition”.  It is reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition, when the slightest slip of the tongue might be viewed as a rebellion against the prevailing orthodoxy.  Today’s prevailing orthodoxy in Europe is that native Europeans should stand by and say nothing while Muslim men gang rape their women.

In the Formerly Great Britain, a BBC sportcaster, Dan Walker, was recently promoted to start hosting a daily morning TV show, “BBC Breakfast”.  Within hours, however, there was a media led cacophony calling for Walker’s removal from his job.  Walker’s crime?  It turns out he happens to be a Christian who believes in…gasp!…Creationism.  The London Telegraph presented the case for the prosecution:

“Someone who is on the record as believing that the earth is flat would be an unlikely anchor of the BBC’s flagship breakfast news show. A news reporter who denied basic facts from the past such as the French revolution, the explosion of Mount Vesuvius, or the Holocaust would surely raise eyebrows at interview. Climate change denial, or a denial of heliocentrism, would be unlikely to find favor at the BBC, and yet they have just selected a creationist to front their ‘Breakfast’ show.  A belief that the earth is between six and ten thousand years old, and that presumably God planted dinosaur skeletons in the ground to give us all something to talk about, goes well beyond the values for which people of faith can demand respect.”

Yes, you read that right:  Freedom of Belief is now to be circumscribed in the U.K. based on a subjective standard of whether your fellows decide on whether or not your beliefs “deserve respect”.  If the Star Chamber consensus is that they do not, then No Free Speech for you.  The case against Mr. Walker says more about the anti-religious bigotry of his detractors than it does about him.  The case actually boils down to a pile of mere conjecture, speculation, and smear.  But that is the hallmark of how Political Correctness works.  Never forget that Political Correctness is a system of control.  It is not about protecting feelings, it is about dictating what you can say and think.  It is ascendant everywhere in the West, even in America.

Case in point:  The University of Texas at Austin police department issued a disorderly conduct citation to an outdoor preacher on Tuesday after students complained that his message had offended them.  The preacher was an intern with Campus Ministry USA, an evangelical ministry organization that travels around college campuses loudly preaching their message.  The Preacher was on a public sidewalk, adjacent to the University campus, and was speaking out against STDs, warning against anal sex.  Students complained that the Preacher’s use of the words “anal” and “penis” offended them.  Stated the University Cop to the Preacher:  “It’s illegal to offend someone.”  Only in the confines of the Marxist Mini-States that are America’s universities.  But the push is on to enforce that notion everywhere.

I was not aware that those on the Left had a problem with these two words.  They seem to use them all the time in their own speech.  Never mind that the whole idea of “offending someone as a criminal offense” is anathema to the concept of Freedom of Speech.  For today’s campus Totalitarians, that is par for the course.  After Campus Ministry USA retained a lawyer, the charges were dropped.  For now.  But giving offense remains an actionable crime everywhere else in the West, from Canada to Australia to Europe.

America stands alone as the last nation willing to give legal protection to free speech, and that freedom continues to shrink by the day.
