VIA| Why 22-year-old Amy Poole found out she was going to be giving birth to a second child, the Maestag, Wales resident couldn’t have been happier. After just 20 weeks of pregnancy, doctors informed her that her son – by then given the name Ollie – had some “unexpected soft tissue” extruding out of his nose.
The small lump turned out to be an encephalocele, essentially an opening in the upper half of your skull, either on the front between your forehead and nose or on the back of the skull. While you’d expect most people to be gentle with a poor little soul like this, after Ollie was born Poole unfortunately found that almost the opposite was true.
“To me, Ollie is perfect,” Poole told the Mirror. “He is my real-life Pinocchio and I couldn’t be prouder of him.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Website, “Encephalocele happens when the neural tube does not close completely during pregnancy.”
These comments come in the wake of insults that have been hurled at her son by incredibly rude strangers. Apparently once a women even told her that the boy should have been aborted – leading Poole to “nearly burst into tears.”
Back in November of 2014, Ollie finally had some important surgery to correct some of the health issues involved with his facial deformation. While his nose may still be abnormally large, this young boy is happy and healthy – all that a mother can ask for!
