VIRAL THREAD– It’s not something many of us really want to think about, is it – the end of the world? What with the fact that you and everyone you know would instantly die and that, it could put a downer on your day. Still, there’s a chance it could happen in our lifetime.
Okay, not a huge chance, but still… The Discovery Channel have thrown together an uber-realistic version of what the scenario would look like if it were a large asteroid. It’s fair to say that after seeing this, a change of underwear will be required.
The last major, the Cretaceous-Paleogene, hit some 66 million years ago… so there were very few shopping centres, motorways and schools around. But what if an asteroid with a diameter of 310 miles wide landed in the Pacific Ocean this very day?
7 billion people inhabit planet Earth. If it took at least 90-95% of life — as it did with the “Great Dying” — over 5 billion people would vanish into ash and fire (I warned you about underwear).
Let’s take a look at how it would play out…Scroll to the bottom for the video
An asteroid with a diameter of roughly 310 miles heading toward Earth
Exact destination: The Pacific Ocean
The impact peels the six miles of crust off the surface
The shockwave travels at hypersonic speed destroying anything in its path
Debris is blasted across into low Earth orbit
And returns to destroy the surface of the Earth
The firestorm encircles the Earth…
Vaporising all life in its way
Within one day, the surface of the Earth is uninhabitable
The evidence shows that this happened at least six times in Earth’s history…
And it could happen again…
Now check out the incredible simulation…
