VIA| Starbucks recently debuted their new red “holiday” cup.
According to a statement released by Jeffrey Fields, the vice president of design, the goal was to create peace and calm:
“Starbucks has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays. We’re embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it.”
The minimalist design, which no longer includes the words “Merry Christmas,” has been the source of controversy since the cups first began appearing in Starbucks locations.
Joshua Feuerstein came up with a plan to prank Starbucks, though, and released video instructions on how to trick Starbucks baristas into writing “Merry Christmas” on the cups. Just tell them that’s your name…
Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus … SO I PRANKED THEM … and they HATE IT!!!! #shareUse #MERRYCHRISTMASSTARBUCKSFollow -> Joshua Feuerstein

He then encouraged anyone who participated to post “coffee selfies” along with the following hashtag: #MerryChristmasStarbucks. His video, thus far, has received mixed reviews.
Some thought it was absolutely brilliant:
Starbucks not putting Christmas on cups this year so when u buy a coffee tell them ur name is MerryChristmas #MerryChristmasstarbucks

Can I get a name for your cup? Sure. “Merry Christmas” #MerryChristmasStarbucks pic.twitter.com/lFgFASnBsi

And some thought it was a waste of time:
Hello, I’m Zach. I choose to try and follow the teachings of Jesus. I also couldn’t care less about red cups. #MerryChristmasStarbucks

The Starbucks Christmas cups thing is hilariously stupid. People are freaking out over cups. Cups… #MerryChristmasStarbucks

First they came for “Merry Christmas” and I did not speak out… because it WASN’T. EVEN. ADVENT. YET.#MerryChristmasStarbucks #calmdown

And one guy had another theory entirely:
I believe the new Starbucks holiday cups are actually grain silos. #merrychristmasstarbucks
